The Organization
Who We Are
The Association for the Improvement of Women’s Status in Lakia was the first recognized Bedouin non-profit organization in the Negev. The Association was founded by Bedouin women with the goal of empowering Bedouin women and children through the improvement of their economic, educational and social status.
Our Major Objectives:
To improve Bedouin women’s economic standing by expanding sources of livelihood
To empower Bedouin women through lectures, workshops and professional training
To advance Bedouin children and youth by providing opportunities to improve their education through reading and educational enrichment
To strengthen Bedouin youth through activities for self-empowerment, commitment to their community, and combatting violence.
To shatter stereotypes of Bedouin society by promoting understanding, tolerance and equality
To preserve the tradition of Bedouin Embroidery
Our Three Main Fields of Activity:
- The Desert Embroidery Project supports Bedouin women economically and preserves Bedouin folk art
- The Desert Embroidery Educational Visitor Center provides a deeper understanding of traditional Bedouin life and the progress made in the present while fostering understanding and tolerance. Visitors from Israel and abroad enjoy talks from Bedouin women on the tradition of embroidery and advancement of Bedouin women. We offer home-cooked meals and a variety of workshops.
- Educational initiatives for children and youth to improve educational achievements, foster a love of reading, improve self-confidence and combat the problems facing Bedouin society. Our Mobile Library reaches over 1,500 children. Our Youth Leadership and Educational Projects provide the support needed for higher education.
